Do Carbs make you fat ?
Do carbs make you fat ?
After being in the fitness industry for 25 years I’ve heard constantly how carbs make you fat .
Let’s have a closer look at this. Carbohydrates are predominantly sugar. Your brain needs Carbs to survive. We are also made of trillions of cells which create energy in a part of the cell called the mitochondria.
To create energy in the mitochondria, carbs need to be ingested. Without carbs no energy can be created. In food, most people think of carbs as bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. Now I don’t know about you , but as a kid growing up , super skinny , I ate huge amounts , especially of bread . Like almost all kids then. Then why didn’t we get fat ?
The reason is simple , the body burns fuel off in an order. Carbs first , fat second then protein third . If you have too many carbs AND YOU DON’T MOVE , then you don’t burn off the carbs and you don’t burn off the fat !
There’s always a percentage of fat in your meals , so you need to exercise to burn it off . If you have a low carb diet , sure you will only have fat to burn and get thinner but you’ll have no energy, not be able to create energy, and feel awful.
Also most people don’t realise that fruit and veg are carbs. How can they make you fat? I don’t think they can .
Yet again , it comes down to a few important things. Eat natural not processed , eat in moderation, eat in comparison to how much exercise you are doing , exercise more, then eat to accomodate how much you have burned off. Use low GI carbs to give you longer lasting energy.
So carbs don’t make you fat , fat makes you fat and if you don’t burn all food off with exercise then you will get fatter !!
Build up your metabolism by getting fitter and you will burn off fuel even when you’re asleep !
