Australia’s Obesity Crisis
Obesity is on the rise in Australia still! Even with all of the education out there informing people of the dangers of being overweight and obese. In August this year there were figures released on just how bad this is now…..
63.4% of Australian adults (11.2 million!) are overweight or obese, 10% are severely obese. Around 25% of children and adolescents (aged 5-17) are overweight or obese. Add into this 29% (5.2 million) of adults are obese
Now of course, as we know, this can lead to an array of other medical problems, Around 70% of obese adults are subsequently afflicted with one health condition such as heart disease, stroke, musculoskeletal diseases, hypertension, type 2 diabetes.
2.6 million of these adults have Hypertension and obesity has skyrocketed by 80% in the last 33 years. It seems that middle aged men are the worst when it comes to this overweight statistic, a staggering 75-80% are overweight in Australia.
Now, this is all based on BMI, which of course is not a great indication of telling if someone is overweight or not, however, the figures are still alarming and have some element of truth behind them. As a personal trainer on the Gold Coast or anywhere in Australia, we have a huge part to play in reducing these statistics to start helping people live a more fulfilled and active life and pass it onto their children. Motivation, realistic goal setting, re-education and not giving up on your client will be the major factors in this quest. So get out there and start helping these people.
